President Akufo-Addo recently delivered a speech highlighting his administration’s efforts to address environmental issues in Ghana. He mentioned initiatives such as the Green Ghana project, which has reportedly resulted in the planting of over 50 million trees since 2017, and the National Electric Vehicle Policy aimed at accelerating the country’s energy transition.
However, in response to the President’s speech, Awula Serwaa, the Founder and Coordinator of Eco Conscious Citizens, criticized the government’s approach to environmental issues. She described the President as living in a “parallel universe” and argued that his speech failed to acknowledge the true state of the country.
Serwaa pointed out that illegal mining activities continue to devastate Ghana’s rivers, forest reserves, and environment with little government intervention. She emphasized the impact of these activities on climate change and biodiversity, noting that the government’s actions contradict its supposed commitment to environmental conservation.
Furthermore, Serwaa questioned the President’s claim of planting over 50 million trees since 2017 and called for transparency and data to support this figure. She urged the government to declare a state of emergency in all mining areas and revoke Legislative Instrument L.I 2462 to address environmental challenges effectively.
Illegal mining in Ghana has resulted in severe environmental degradation, including water pollution with mercury and cyanide, deforestation, and soil erosion. These activities pose significant risks to ecosystems and human health in the long run. Despite government efforts to regulate illegal mining, the practice persists due to poverty, limited job opportunities, and high global demand for gold.
It is crucial for the government to take decisive action to combat illegal mining and other environmental challenges in Ghana to safeguard the country’s natural resources and protect the well-being of its citizens. By addressing these issues effectively, Ghana can work towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
