President-elect Donald Trump’s deportation strategy will include targeting so-called sanctuary jurisdictions, his new border czar, Tom Homan, says.
Prioritizing National Security Threats and Violent Criminals
In an interview with The Center Square, Homan said the plan will prioritize national security threats and violent criminals, including those with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer requests.
Challenges with Sanctuary City Policies
A recent ICE report highlighted how some local jurisdictions have reduced their cooperation with ICE, even for noncitizens convicted of serious felonies, due to their sanctuary city policies. Homan emphasized that these policies can end up shielding dangerous criminals who pose a threat to public safety.
Enforcing Federal Immigration Law
Despite resistance from Democratic leaders in sanctuary jurisdictions, Homan pointed out that federal immigration law requires cooperation with ICE. Anyone harboring or concealing illegal aliens from federal law enforcement officers is committing a crime under Title 8 USC 13.24 iii.
Collaboration for Public Safety
Homan expressed his willingness to work with both Democrats and Republicans to ensure public safety. He urged local leaders to cooperate with ICE in removing illegal foreign nationals from their custody, emphasizing the benefits of reducing costs and enhancing community safety.
Reviewing Sanctuary City Status
Homan called on Trump’s nominated Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to review whether sanctuary jurisdictions violating federal law by refusing to comply with ICE detainer requests. He also mentioned the possibility of federal prosecution and penalties for non-compliant jurisdictions.
Addressing Criminal Activities
ICE officials highlighted the challenges posed by sanctuary policies in facilitating criminal activities, including sex crimes and drug trafficking. They emphasized the need for cities and towns to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to keep communities safe.
Ending Sanctuary Policies
Homan’s message to local jurisdictions was clear – work with ICE to enhance community safety, or step aside. He emphasized the importance of cooperation in arresting individuals already in custody to prevent further crimes.
