Daniel Chapo Inaugurated as Mozambique’s President Amid Controversy
Amid widespread controversy over disputed election results, Daniel Chapo has been inaugurated as Mozambique’s president. The opposition leader, Venancio Mondlane, who recently returned from exile, has vowed daily protests throughout Chapo’s entire term if necessary. Mondlane accused the government of suppressing peace and claimed that members of his team were shot with live ammunition during demonstrations last week.
The protests began after the election results were announced last October and have resulted in over 300 deaths, according to the electoral monitoring group Plataforma DECIDE. International observers, including the EU mission to the country, have reported irregularities such as the alteration of results in the election process. In response to these reports, some civil society groups have petitioned the African Union to withhold recognition of Chapo’s presidency.
Despite the controversy, some African leaders, including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, attended Chapo’s inauguration ceremony. The situation in Mozambique remains tense as the country grapples with the aftermath of a highly disputed election and ongoing protests.
