The Zambia U20 Women National Team continued their dominant run at the COSAFA U20 Women’s Championship 2024 with a stunning 6-0 victory over Botswana at the UJ stadium in Johannesburg. The Young Copper Queens displayed their prowess from the onset, with Jacqueline Mbewe opening the scoring in the first minute after capitalizing on a defensive error.

Player of the Match, Saliya Mwanza, showcased her skill and determination by dribbling past Botswana midfielders to score Zambia’s second goal in the 35th minute. Captain Mary Mbewe extended the lead to 3-0 just before halftime, courtesy of an assist from Gift Chilwizhi.

In the second half, substitute Ruth Muwowo’s shot was deflected into the net by a Botswana defender, further increasing Zambia’s lead. Another substitute, Edith Phiri, unleashed a powerful strike to make it 5-0 in favor of Zambia. Muwowo added her fourth goal of the tournament with a clinical finish past the Botswana goalkeeper, sealing Zambia’s 18th goal of the campaign without conceding any.

With three consecutive wins, the Young Copper Queens are firmly in control of the tournament as they prepare to face Mozambique in their final group game. The competition features five countries playing a round-robin format, where three points are awarded for a win and one for a draw. Zambia’s impressive performance has positioned them as strong contenders for the title.

The team’s success can be attributed to their cohesive teamwork, clinical finishing, and solid defense. The players have demonstrated determination and skill on the field, showcasing Zambia’s talent in women’s football. As they look ahead to the knockout stages, the Young Copper Queens will aim to maintain their winning momentum and lift the trophy at the COSAFA U20 Women’s Championship 2024.
