Man on Pretrial Release for Auto Theft Allegation Carjacks Woman
CHICAGO — A shocking incident unfolded in Chicago when a man, who was on pretrial release for allegedly driving a stolen vehicle, carjacked a woman and attempted to rob two other victims before being detained by courageous bystanders until the police arrived.
Judge David Kelly ordered 19-year-old Trevon Reed to be detained on new charges of vehicular hijacking and attempted robbery. Reed was also held for violating the conditions of his pretrial release in the pending auto theft case.
The chaotic events took place last Wednesday afternoon when police responded to reports of a person with a gun. Witnesses held Reed outside Sharks Fish & Chicken, 5048 South Cottage Grove, until law enforcement arrived, according to a CPD report.
A 31-year-old woman identified Reed as the man who threatened her with a gun, pursued her, and tried to steal her car keys in the 700 block of East 50th Street. In another incident, Reed allegedly attempted to rob and carjack a 34-year-old woman by implying he was armed in the 5000 block of South Evans. Prosecutors mentioned that a third victim was also targeted during Reed’s crime spree.
Court records reveal that Reed was initially arrested on May 5 after being caught driving a stolen Ford Fusion on the Stevenson Expressway. Police apprehended him after he fled from the vehicle while wearing blue latex gloves.
Prosecutors disclosed that Reed had recently completed probation for a robbery he committed as a juvenile.
