Police in Chicago have reported that a tragic incident occurred on a Blue Line train near Rosemont last week, resulting in the fatal stabbing of a passenger. The suspect, 66-year-old Lawrence Strother, attempted to flee the scene by jumping onto a shopping mall shuttle bus, but was apprehended by Rosemont police officers.
According to a witness on the train, Strother and 42-year-old Jason Rowinski got into an argument while traveling on the inbound train between O’Hare and Rosemont around 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25. The altercation escalated when Strother pulled out a knife and stabbed Rowinski once in the left knee. Tragically, Rowinski succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at Lutheran General Hospital less than 30 minutes later.
After exiting the train at the Rosemont station, Strother attempted to escape by boarding a shopping mall shuttle. However, Rosemont police officers were able to track him down and obtain a confession on a body camera. Strother was subsequently taken into custody by Chicago officers at the Rosemont police station.
Strother is set to appear for a detention hearing today to determine the next steps in the legal proceedings. This incident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers that can arise in public spaces and the importance of swift action by law enforcement to ensure justice is served.
