English Actor Bella Ramsey Opens Up About Receiving an Autistic Diagnosis

English actor Bella Ramsey recently shared that they have received an autistic diagnosis.

In a candid interview with British Vogue, the star of “Last of Us” revealed that they were diagnosed with autism while filming Season 1 of the popular series. Ramsey, who prefers the pronouns they/them, had previously hinted at their neurodivergence but had hesitated to speak openly about it.

According to Ramsey, the decision to seek a mental evaluation came after a crew member, who had an autistic child, suggested that Ramsey might also be on the autism spectrum. The diagnosis not only validated a suspicion that Ramsey had always harbored but also brought a new level of self-awareness.

Surprisingly, Ramsey shared that their autism diagnosis has actually enhanced their acting abilities. They explained, “I’ve always observed people and taken notes. Acting has been easier for me because I’ve had to learn more about how to communicate and socialize with others by hand.”

Ramsey also highlighted the importance of having a structured routine in their life. They explained, “I have a call time, and I’m told what to wear, how to stand, where to stand, and what to eat.” This sense of order and guidance has been instrumental in helping Ramsey navigate the challenges of everyday tasks.

Describing the diagnosis as “freeing,” Ramsey emphasized that it has allowed them to approach the world with more compassion towards themselves. They stated, “As someone with autism, I have learned how to navigate the world. There is no excuse for people to be unaware.”
