The Akwatia parliamentary seat is up for grabs in the upcoming by-election slated for September 2, 2025, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is confident in their ability to retain it. The late Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, passed away, prompting the need for a by-election, and the NPP is determined to secure victory in his honor.

Kwame Owiredu, spokesperson for the NPP’s campaign team in Akwatia, expressed the party’s unwavering commitment to winning the seat. He mentioned on Channel One TV’s Akwatia Watch program that the party is resolute in their efforts to keep the seat, despite the somber mood following Kumi’s passing.

Owiredu highlighted the overwhelming support from party members and the local community, who all believe in the NPP’s ability to emerge victorious. He emphasized the importance of this election in upholding the legacy of Ernest Yaw Kumi, stating that retaining the seat would be a fitting tribute to his memory.

The by-election in Akwatia holds significance beyond just a seat in parliament. It serves as a litmus test for the NPP’s strength in the Eastern Region and a chance for the party to maintain its parliamentary numbers after the loss of Kumi.

On the other hand, the Eastern Regional Deputy Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nathaniel Tetteh, dismissed the NPP’s optimism. He criticized the opposition party’s campaign as lacking substance, accusing them of relying too heavily on Kumi’s legacy without presenting a clear plan for the people of Akwatia.

As the by-election draws near, all eyes are on Akwatia to see which party will emerge victorious and carry on the mantle left by Ernest Kumi. The NPP remains confident in their chances, while the NDC continues to challenge their campaign strategy. This election is not just about winning a seat – it’s about honoring the memory of a dedicated public servant and ensuring that his legacy lives on in the halls of parliament.
