Activist Calls for Early Exit of NPP Government

Renowned legal practitioner and activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has made a bold statement by urging the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, headed by President Nana Akufo-Addo, to vacate office before the scheduled handover date of January 7, 2025.

Barker-Vormawor, a prominent figure in the #FixTheCountry movement and a vocal critic of the Akufo-Addo administration, took to Facebook on Sunday, December 8, 2024, to express his frustration. Following the recent elections that saw the victory of National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate John Dramani Mahama, he questioned the necessity of waiting until the official transition date.

“Do we really have to wait till 7th January for handover?” he pondered. “Why can’t they just go now. No one needs their handing over notes. Who will read it?”

Barker-Vormawor has been at odds with the Akufo-Addo government, accusing them of targeting him unfairly. He has faced legal challenges, including charges of treason felony, for which he is currently standing trial.

In a recent incident, Barker-Vormawor was detained for over two weeks along with other members of the Democracy Hub pressure group following a protest in Accra against illegal mining activities known as “galamsey.”

Meanwhile, the NPP’s presidential candidate, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has gracefully accepted defeat in the December 7, 2024, general election. He acknowledged John Mahama’s victory as “decisive,” while the Electoral Commission is in the process of finalizing the official election results.

Barker-Vormawor’s comments highlight the growing impatience among critics and opposition supporters eager for the NDC to assume power, given what they perceive as the diminishing credibility of the outgoing government. The NPP administration over the past eight years has been marred by challenges such as economic hardships, high living costs, corruption, arrogance, and abuse of power.
