The Gauteng government has recently announced the expansion of its Provincial Network WiFi project, which aims to provide greater access to free internet for residents. The e-government department of the province, responsible for digital infrastructure in public institutions, has unveiled 30 new sites connected with free Wi-Fi.
The launch event for this expansion is set to take place at Daveyton Main Clinic and Lesiba Secondary School in the East Rand. These two locations mark the beginning of the increased access to free internet in various public facilities such as schools, libraries, clinics, hospitals, and community centers.
Since the inception of the WiFi project in 2014, over 1,200 sites across Gauteng have been connected with free Wi-Fi. By the end of the 2024/2025 financial year, the provincial government plans to provide 353 sites with a wide-area network (WAN) and convert 250 sites into WiFi hotspots.
In a related development, Communications Minister Solly Malatsi has initiated plans to expand broadband connectivity across South Africa. The country has faced challenges with limited internet connectivity in rural areas, digital skills, technology access, and high data prices. Minister Malatsi aims to issue a policy direction to the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) to clarify the government’s position on equity equivalent programs to enhance broadband access for underserved communities.
The minister believes that expanding access to broadband connectivity for millions of South Africans, especially those in remote areas and low-income households, would be a significant empowerment program. This initiative could potentially become one of the largest empowerment programs ever undertaken by the South African government.
The efforts to improve internet connectivity and access to digital resources are crucial for bridging the digital divide and promoting economic development and social inclusion. By providing free WiFi in public institutions and expanding broadband connectivity nationwide, the government is taking steps towards a more connected and empowered society.
