The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has taken a proactive approach to dispel misconceptions surrounding the use of Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) in elections. In a bid to address concerns about the manipulation of these devices, the EC has launched an innovative skit that combines humour and storytelling to engage young audiences and combat misinformation ahead of the 7 December presidential and parliamentary elections.

The skit features a cast of young actors who portray a fictional scenario where baseless claims about BVDs are raised. Some actors voice concerns that the devices could be tampered with to rig votes, but one cast member intervenes to explain the purpose, use, and benefits of BVDs. He clarifies that the devices ensure transparency by verifying voter identity, benefiting political parties, candidates, and voters alike. The intervention also debunks the myth that the EC or political parties could manipulate the devices during elections.

The goal of the skit is to eliminate misconceptions that could lead to distrust in the electoral process. The EC is committed to combating disinformation during this crucial period, emphasizing the importance of transparency and integrity in elections.

This creative approach to public education demonstrates the EC’s commitment to promoting peaceful and credible elections. By using relatable drama and storytelling, the message is not only memorable but also easily shareable on social media platforms. The EC’s strategy is part of a broader campaign to foster trust and unity among citizens, particularly during times of heightened tensions and misinformation.

The EC’s efforts are bolstered by partnerships with community leaders, youth organizations, and social media influencers, who work together to inspire young Ghanaians to prioritize peace and unity over partisan divisions. By demystifying the electoral process and engaging with the electorate, the EC sets a standard for using innovation to strengthen democracy and ensure peaceful elections.

This initiative not only addresses immediate concerns but also lays the groundwork for a more informed and engaged electorate in future elections. By leveraging creative outreach and partnerships, the EC is paving the way for a more transparent, accountable, and participatory electoral process in Ghana.
