Police arrest over 300 during Tshwane weekend crime crackdown

Authorities in Tshwane conducted a series of operations over the weekend, resulting in the arrest of over 300 suspects and the recovery of five hijacked and stolen vehicles. The operations were carried out by the SA Police Service officers and the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD).

The TMPD reported that five stolen and hijacked vehicles were recovered in different areas of Tshwane during the operations. One of the vehicles, a grey Toyota Yaris, was found abandoned near the Gateway complex in Hatfield. Inside the vehicle, authorities discovered a signal jamming device, indicating possible involvement in criminal activities.

Another vehicle, a GWM Steed, which was hijacked in Soshanguve, was also recovered by the TMPD Tactical unit members. Additionally, a grey Chery Tiggo and a black Land Rover, both stolen during robberies in Rustenburg, were found in Soshanguve. A white Polo Vivo, hijacked in Atteridgeville, was recovered in Lotus Gardens, Pretoria West.

Undocumented individuals

According to Tshwane District police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, a total of 320 suspects were arrested for various offenses over the weekend. This included arrests for gender-based violence, murder, housebreaking, theft, armed robbery, and rape. Additionally, 23 undocumented individuals were detained and are awaiting deportation.

During the operations, a total of 520 individuals and 334 vehicles were searched, with 24 vehicles being tested for stolen property. Nine individuals were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, and 18 persons were arrested for drinking in public. Authorities also seized 27 Ziplock bags containing various drugs from three suspects.

Van Dyk further stated that 12 AARTO infringement notices were issued, totaling R9,250. One liquor establishment was closed for non-compliance with the Liquor Act, and authorities confiscated 3660 milliliters of liquor and two gambling machines.

Overall, the operations conducted by the authorities in Tshwane over the weekend led to significant arrests and the recovery of stolen vehicles, demonstrating their commitment to combating crime in the area.
