Teresa Clarke, Chair, CEO, and Executive Editor of Africa.com, recently sat down with Dr. Paulin Basinga, the newly appointed leader of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Africa, to discuss advancing public health initiatives on the continent.

In a world where Africa is often portrayed through lenses of despair and paternalism, Dr. Basinga brings a fresh perspective to philanthropy. He believes in prioritizing dignity and partnership over dependency when it comes to aiding the continent. As he stated in the interview, “Africa is not a charity case. It’s a continent full of potential – and our job is to work with others to help unlock it.”

The opening of new offices in Senegal and Kenya by the Gates Foundation signifies a long-term commitment to integrating philanthropy into Africa’s local ecosystems. Dr. Basinga emphasizes that philanthropy should catalyze change without overshadowing governments or the private sector.

Recognizing the challenges Africa faces, from climate change to food insecurity, Dr. Basinga remains optimistic. He aims to spark innovation and collaboration that leads to lasting change on the continent.

Expanding the foundation’s presence in Senegal and Kenya is not about exerting influence but about deepening impact. Dr. Basinga believes that working closely with policymakers and local communities is crucial for scaling sustainable solutions.

Building local capacity is a key focus for Dr. Basinga. He understands the dangers of dependence on external funding and aims to enhance government functions rather than replace them. By strengthening health systems and supporting local initiatives, the foundation aims to deliver better services and foster self-reliance.

With a diverse background in public health reforms across Africa, Dr. Basinga is well-equipped to lead the foundation in addressing African priorities. He emphasizes the importance of local-led research and production in building trust in health systems.

The foundation’s top priorities in Africa include health, agriculture, and women’s empowerment. Dr. Basinga highlights the importance of supporting climate adaptation, improving access to seeds and fertilizers, and promoting economic empowerment for women and smallholder farmers.

In conclusion, Dr. Basinga’s strategic vision for the Gates Foundation in Africa embodies a commitment to sustainable development through localized engagement and strategic partnerships. With his extensive experience and deep understanding of African needs, he is poised to lead the foundation to a successful and sustainable future on the continent.
