Tshisekedi pushes for change as allies battle criticism

He argued that a longer term would give the president more time to implement their agenda and policies without being distracted by the prospect of re-election. This, he believes, would lead to more stability and progress in the country.

On the other hand, some fear that extending the presidential term could lead to authoritarianism and a lack of accountability. They argue that regular elections are essential for democracy and that limiting the president to two terms prevents the concentration of power in one individual.

Amidst all this debate and tension, the future of constitutional reform in the DRC remains uncertain. President Tshisekedi’s push for change has divided the country and sparked both support and opposition. Only time will tell how this situation will unfold and what it means for the political landscape of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to the proposal put forth by the speaker, the current presidential term of five years, renewable once, could be replaced by a single nine-year term. This change, he argues, would serve to strengthen the president’s control mechanisms and could potentially allow for a mid-term evaluation.

The speaker believes that implementing a nine-year term for the president would help to regulate the seasonal paralysis that often occurs in institutions during election periods. By eliminating the need for multiple elections, this new system would save significant amounts of money that are typically spent on campaigning and organizing elections. Additionally, having a single, longer term would allow for a greater focus on ensuring strict compliance with the president’s mandate, which would be clearly defined and unable to be extended.

By having a longer term in office, the president would have more time to implement their policies and initiatives without the distraction of having to campaign for re-election. This would allow for greater continuity and consistency in governance, as well as providing the opportunity for a thorough evaluation of the president’s performance midway through their term.

Overall, the proposed shift to a single nine-year term for the president has the potential to streamline the political process, reduce election-related costs, and enhance the effectiveness of the presidency. It remains to be seen whether this idea will gain traction and be implemented in the future, but it is certainly an interesting concept to consider for improving governance and decision-making at the highest levels of leadership.
