Mauritius Opposition Alliance for Change Sweeps National Election

The Alliance for Change, Mauritius’ opposition coalition, has achieved a resounding victory in the national election by securing all 62 directly contested parliamentary seats. This outcome serves as a clear rejection of Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth’s ruling coalition, the Militant Socialist Movement, which did not manage to win a single seat. Jugnauth, who has been in office since 2017, gracefully conceded defeat before all votes were tallied, acknowledging the defeat of his government.

The election results will see the return of former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam to power. Ramgoolam, who has previously led Mauritius on two occasions, is now set to lead the country once again. The official count, which includes two seats from Rodrigues Island and eight seats nominated by the Electoral Supervisory Council, is expected to confirm a total of 70 parliamentary seats. This election, the 12th since Mauritius gained independence in 1968, reaffirms the country’s standing as a stable democracy and underscores the resilience of its economy, which is primarily driven by finance, tourism, and agriculture.
