Intensive Security Sweeps Ahead of Akwatia’s By-Election in Ghana

Law enforcement officers in Ghana have detained ten individuals and confiscated nine firearms in preparation for the upcoming by-election in Akwatia, Eastern Region.

During a two-day security operation on August 22-23, authorities focused on curbing illegal weapons possession through checkpoints and residential searches. The sweep resulted in the recovery of eight pump-action shotguns and a locally made single-barrel firearm.

One of the notable interceptions was Bernard Kumi Ofosu, who was found with a pump-action weapon and ammunition near St. Dominic Hospital. While Ofosu provided licensing documentation, officials are verifying the permit’s authenticity before considering charges.

At the Akwatia Y-Junction checkpoint, Joshua Amenuku was apprehended for possessing cartridges, leading to the discovery of another firearm at his residence. This incident expanded the scope of potential violations.

Enoch Asiedu and Chinese national Lu Youyan were arrested at Boadua Livingstone Junction after ammunition was traced back to their workplace. Their employer, who is currently at large, has become a person of interest in the case.

Another significant seizure occurred at the same checkpoint when Pieterson Joseph was detained with a pump-action gun and 46 rounds of ammunition. The large quantity raised concerns about the intended use during the electoral period.

During evening patrols in Staff Village, Boadua, a Toyota Tundra pickup truck was stopped, revealing three additional pump-action firearms. Driver Stephen Nkansah claimed ownership of two weapons, while attributing the third to a traditional leader.

Given the history of electoral violence in the Eastern Region, security measures are being heightened to ensure peaceful voting conditions. The recent weapons seizures are part of proactive efforts to prevent armed intimidation and potential post-election conflicts in Akwatia.

Verification processes for the seized firearms will determine the appropriate course of action for suspects, distinguishing between prosecution and administrative violations. Licensed gun owners are reminded to adhere to storage and transportation regulations, especially during sensitive political periods.

As election day approaches, additional security personnel have been deployed across the constituency to monitor campaign activities and polling preparations, underscoring the commitment to a safe and secure electoral process.
