Health Minister Reveals Staggering Financial Impact of Medical Negligence

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has recently shed light on the alarming financial repercussions of medical negligence within Ghana’s healthcare system.

According to Akandoh, each case of negligence costs the country a minimum of ten million cedis per medical facility, depleting resources that could otherwise be utilized for enhancing medical services.

Expressing deep concern over this escalating issue, the minister described it as “a looming threat” in Ghana’s health sector. He emphasized the paradox of struggling to secure funding for advanced medical equipment while simultaneously expending significant sums on preventable errors.

Akandoh disclosed that his office is currently managing three active cases of medical negligence requiring formal responses. The gravity of the situation has prompted direct involvement from the Attorney General’s office in addressing these grievances.

While hinting at a potential comprehensive public address on the matter in the future, the health minister underscored the urgent necessity of rectifying systemic issues within medical facilities nationwide to safeguard both patients and public finances.
