A Pretoria businessman remains in captivity as kidnappers demand ransom

Recent developments in the case of a Pretoria businessman being held captive by kidnappers have taken a dramatic turn. Police have successfully tracked down and eliminated a key suspect in the kidnapping ring, Mauro Mucambe Junior, who was wanted in connection with multiple abduction cases.

Mucambe, a 40-year-old Mozambican national, had evaded arrest since an outstanding warrant was issued by Maputo police in August 2024. However, the police’s anti-kidnapping unit managed to locate him at a residential complex in Fourways during an operation aimed at rescuing the kidnapped Pakistani businessman.

Police operation leads to suspect’s demise

The operation began in Midrand, where law enforcement officers seized valuable evidence and arrested two kidnapping suspects. Moving swiftly to Fourways, the task team engaged in a shootout with Mauro Mucambe Junior, resulting in his fatal injury.

Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the national police spokesperson, confirmed the successful operation and the seizure of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, cellphones, and bank cards from the deceased suspect.

Despite this breakthrough, the kidnapped Pretoria businessman remains in captivity, with his captors demanding a ransom from his family. The police are actively working to secure his safe release.

Increase in kidnapping incidents

South Africa has witnessed a concerning surge in kidnapping cases, prompting swift action from law enforcement agencies. Since January last year, over 170 individuals involved in ransom-related crimes have been arrested, resulting in the recovery of more than R1.2 million.

The police have also successfully rescued over 100 victims, primarily in Gauteng, and seized more than 40 vehicles used in kidnapping operations. A recent incident saw the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department officers rescue a woman who was abducted by her ex-boyfriend while on a night shift in Midrand.

As the authorities continue their efforts to combat kidnapping activities, it is crucial for the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious incidents. With ongoing investigations and targeted operations, law enforcement agencies are determined to bring an end to this alarming trend of kidnappings in the country.
