Former Stellenbosch Mayor Nyaniso Jindela Fatally Shot

The Western Cape community is reeling from the tragic news of the shooting death of Nyaniso Jindela, the former mayor of Stellenbosch.

Reports indicate that Jindela was gunned down on Monday evening in a shocking act of violence.

Police Investigation Underway

Sergeant Wesley Twigg, a spokesperson for the Western Cape police, confirmed that authorities are actively investigating the shooting incident.

“The Stellenbosch police have opened a murder case following a shooting that occurred on Monday evening, 9 June 2025, at approximately 8:00 pm on Vineyard Street, Kayamandi. The victim, a 59-year-old man, sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the throat,” Twigg stated.

As the investigation unfolds, the motive behind the attack remains unclear, and no suspects have been apprehended at this time.

Twigg has urged anyone with pertinent information regarding the shooting to come forward and assist law enforcement by contacting Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or anonymously through the MySaps mobile application.

Community Mourns the Loss

In response to the tragic incident, Stellenbosch Municipality released a statement expressing shock and sadness over Jindela’s untimely death.

“Mr. Jindela was a dedicated former councillor who served the community with honor, including in the capacity of deputy mayor. The municipality is fully cooperating with the South African Police Service (Saps) in their investigation and stands ready to provide any necessary assistance,” the statement read.

The municipality extended heartfelt condolences to Jindela’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Past Legal Troubles

Jindela, along with his wife Unathi and three others, faced legal troubles in 2021 related to the murder of former Stellenbosch deputy mayor, Cameron Mcako.

Mcako was fatally shot outside his Kayamandi tavern on 1 November 2019, in what authorities believed to be a politically motivated crime.

The accused were charged with offenses including murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, illegal possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Despite these past legal challenges, Jindela was elected as the executive deputy mayor of Stellenbosch in November 2020.
