The investigation into the shooting incident involving an off-duty police officer in KwaZulu-Natal
Authorities are currently investigating a tragic incident in KwaZulu-Natal where an off-duty police officer was killed in a murder-suicide. The incident, which took place in the Mangethe area, also left another individual critically injured.
Upon receiving reports of the shooting, IPSS Medical Rescue and security personnel rushed to the scene to provide assistance. It was reported that two individuals had sustained gunshot wounds, with one person tragically losing their life. The second victim was found in critical condition, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
According to Samantha Meyrick, a spokesperson for IPSS Medical Rescue, the South African Police Service (SAPS) was already present at the scene when their team arrived. Advanced life support paramedics from IPSS Medical Rescue worked diligently to stabilize the critically injured individual before they were airlifted by the Air Mercy Services helicopter to a specialized medical facility for further treatment.

Tragically, the deceased victim was identified as an off-duty member of the SAPS. In a separate incident on the same day, a horrific shooting took place at the Mfuleni taxi rank in Cape Town, resulting in the deaths of four taxi operators and injuries to two other commuters. According to reports, two gunmen targeted the victims, shooting two taxi operators who were seated in a private vehicle before entering an office where they shot two more operators and injured two others.
Community Outrage and Calls for Justice
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) Western Cape chairperson, Mandla Hermanus, condemned the violent attack and called on law enforcement agencies to swiftly apprehend the perpetrators. Hermanus emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability within the taxi industry, urging operators to remain calm in the wake of the tragic incident.
Santaco has scheduled a meeting with the relevant taxi association to investigate the circumstances leading to the shooting and work towards preventing such senseless acts of violence in the future.
