Newly released video footage has revealed the chilling moment two UK prisoners broke into smiles before brutally beating a convicted sex offender to death in his cell. The incident took place at His Majesty’s Prison Fosse Way in Leicestershire, where Ashirie Smith, 19, and Thierry Robinson, 21, were captured on camera approaching Mahir Abdulrahman’s cell with sinister grins on their faces.
The video, released on Thursday, shows the two men entering Abdulrahman’s cell and emerging just 37 seconds later. A prison warden later found Abdulrahman unconscious and severely beaten inside his cell. Tragically, Abdulrahman, who was serving a 35-week sentence for sex offenses, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead within the hour due to bleeding to the brain.
During the trial, it was revealed that Abdulrahman had requested to be moved to a different cell shortly before the attack, as he had been subjected to harassment by the accused individuals for several days leading up to the incident.
Ashirie Smith, who was serving time for a weapons charge at the time of the attack, was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 17 ½ years to be served. Thierry Robinson, on the other hand, was cleared of murder but found guilty of manslaughter and received an 11-year prison sentence.
A third defendant, Shaan Karim, 38, was acquitted of both murder and manslaughter charges in connection with Abdulrahman’s death. The prison director, Wyn Jones, expressed his condolences to Abdulrahman’s family and all those affected by the tragic and heinous act of violence.
The murder of Mahir Abdulrahman serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that exist within the walls of prisons and the need for increased security measures to protect inmates from such senseless acts of violence.
