Arrest Made in Connection with Limpopo ATM Bombings and Robberies

After a series of ATM bombings and robbery cases in Limpopo, a 31-year-old man has finally been apprehended in the Giyani CBD. The arrest, which took place at around 5pm on Saturday, was the result of intelligence-driven operations conducted by the Mopani District Tracking Team in collaboration with Giyani Public Order Police (POPS) members.

The suspect is facing multiple charges in connection with four incidents, including a robbery with aggravated circumstances and malicious damage to property (ATM bombing) in the Mashabane policing precinct in May 2023, as well as another similar incident in the Seshego policing area in March 2023.

Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba stated, “The arrest operation was executed following actionable intelligence information and thorough monitoring of the suspect’s movements. The multi-disciplinary team successfully located and apprehended the suspect in Giyani CBD.”

Following his arrest, the suspect was taken to Giyani SAPS for formal processing and detention. The case has since been transferred to the Provincial Organised Crime Unit for further investigation.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended the arrest, emphasizing its significance in the fight against organized crime, particularly in addressing the issue of ATM bombings that have plagued communities and cost the economy millions of rands. Hadebe highlighted the effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations and the dedication of specialized units in achieving this breakthrough.

Limpopo Crime Statistics Discussion

Following the presentation of national crime statistics, Hadebe and Violet Mathye, the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, are set to discuss Limpopo’s crime statistics. Notably, two police stations in the province, Thohoyandou and Polokwane, were among the top 30 stations nationwide reporting serious crimes.

Between January 2025 and March 2025, Limpopo recorded five multiple murder incidents, each resulting in the loss of two victims. The MEC and Provincial Commissioner are expected to address the progress made in combating serious and violent crimes, as well as provide an overview of efforts towards creating safer communities in the province.
