The annual Illinois Peace Officers Memorial ceremony in Springfield paid tribute to nine police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2024. The event, held on the first Thursday of May, honors the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice for their communities. Families of the fallen officers received plaques commemorating their loved ones’ service, and the officers’ names were added to a memorial outside the Illinois Capitol.
Governor JB Pritzker commended the officers for their bravery, acknowledging the risks they faced each day to protect others. Among those honored were DeKalb County Deputy Sheriff Christina Musil, Chicago Police Officer Luis Huesca, and Illinois State Police Trooper Corey Thompsen, among others.
Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton expressed heartfelt condolences to the families, recognizing the profound loss they have experienced. Treasurer Mike Frerichs shared a personal connection to the event, honoring his cousin, a California police officer who recently passed away. Frerichs’ office provides a college scholarship fund for children of first responders who died in the line of duty.
Former ISP Trooper Kim Cessna, who leads a nonprofit for family members of fallen officers, shared a touching tribute to her colleague Trooper Thompsen, who tragically lost his life in a crash. She emphasized the importance of remembering and honoring the legacy of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
The emotional toll of court cases following an officer’s death was also highlighted, with Kathleen Rittmanic-Emme, the sister of Bradley Police Officer Marlene Rittmanic, speaking about the challenges families face in seeking justice. Rittmanic’s killer was sentenced to life in prison in January 2021.
Comptroller Susana Mendoza reflected on the loss of Chicago Police Officer Enrique Martinez, who was fatally shot during a traffic stop. Mendoza raised concerns about the suspect’s criminal history and called for policy changes to prioritize officer safety.
The event also recognized K-9 officers for the first time, honoring K-9 units from Rockford, Lake County, and Alton that died in the line of duty. The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and their loyal K-9 partners.
As the community gathered to pay tribute to these brave individuals, the importance of honoring their memory and supporting their families was evident. The Illinois Peace Officers Memorial ceremony serves as a solemn reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily in service to their communities.
