Marvin Bonilla (Chicago Police Department)

Intoxicated Drag Racer Charged in Fatal Crash

Authorities have revealed that an intoxicated drag racer, Marvin Bonilla, was speeding at 102 mph when he collided with another vehicle, resulting in the death of its driver. The tragic incident took place in June 2023, and legal charges are now being pursued in connection with the case.

According to a Chicago police report, Bonilla, 27, was found to have a blood alcohol content of .13 while racing his Ford Mustang in the early hours of June 23, 2023. The collision occurred at the intersection of 59th and Pulaski, where he crashed into a Toyota RAV4 driven by 51-year-old Alberto Onofre.

An officer noted in the report that the impact of the crash was so severe that it nearly split the Toyota in two. Despite initially leaving the scene, Bonilla later called 911 multiple times seeking assistance. Emergency Medical Services transported him to Christ Hospital for treatment following the crash.

Investigators were able to gather DNA evidence confirming Bonilla’s presence behind the wheel of the Mustang at the time of the collision. Upon being informed of the authorities’ search for him in connection with the incident, Bonilla surrendered to the police.

Subsequently, prosecutors have filed charges against him for reckless homicide by motor vehicle and aggravated DUI causing death. Despite the state’s request to detain Bonilla pending trial, Judge John Hock denied the motion.
