President John Dramani Mahama has made a significant appointment in the Ghana Police Service by selecting Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohonu as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP). This decision, in line with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution, was reached after consultation with the Council of State.

In a statement released on Thursday, 13 March, the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, highlighted that COP Yohonu brings a wealth of experience spanning over forty years to his new role as IGP. His main mandate will be to oversee the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service.

COP Yohonu’s appointment comes as he takes over from Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who was appointed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo in July 2021. Dr. Dampare’s tenure officially began on 1 August 2021.

However, amidst the announcement of the new IGP, a legal challenge has emerged. The IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, along with security expert Professor Kwesi Aning, have filed an interlocutory injunction at the Supreme Court to prevent the President from dismissing the IGP and other security agency heads.

The lawsuit, filed on 11 March, refers to a pending case from March 2024 that questions the constitutionality of such dismissals by the President. A ruling on this matter is expected in May 2025. The applicants argue that removing these security agency heads before the court’s final decision would be unjust.

In terms of COP Yohonu’s background, his career has been marked by a series of notable appointments and promotions. From serving as the Accra Central Divisional Commander to being awarded the Grand Medal for his service in 2011, and further promotions to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) and eventually Commissioner of Police (COP), his experience is extensive. Most recently, he served as Deputy Inspector General of Police before his elevation to the top position as IGP.

COP Yohonu is expected to lead the Ghana Police Service in enhancing security, professionalism, and operational efficiency. His appointment signifies a new chapter in the ongoing efforts to strengthen law enforcement in the country.
