A police officer was taken into custody after a prosecutor discovered an error on the admission of guilt fine documents, leading to his arrest and appearance in court.

The police officer’s arrest

Sergeant Tebogo Galetlhobogwe, a member of the detectives unit in the North West province, appeared in the Delareyville Magistrate’s Court on charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice. He was granted bail of R2,000 and is scheduled to reappear in court on Friday, April 4, 2025.

The arrest stemmed from an incident where Galetlhobogwe attempted to release a detained individual for drug possession by having the prosecutor sign incorrect admission of guilt fine documents. The prosecutor noticed the discrepancy and alerted authorities before the suspect could be released.

According to Police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, investigations are ongoing, including within police disciplinary regulations, to address the misconduct.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, condemned the officer’s actions as unprofessional and dishonest, tarnishing the reputation of the police service.

Vehicle arson incident

In another incident in the North West, a police officer’s personal vehicle was set on fire at his residence in Ditshilong village, Taung. The 41-year-old sergeant and his family were alerted by the vehicle’s alarm in the early hours of the morning.

Upon investigation, the officer discovered his vehicle engulfed in flames. Authorities were notified, and a case of malicious damage to property was opened. Police are conducting a manhunt to identify the perpetrators responsible for the arson.

These incidents highlight the challenges faced by law enforcement officers in maintaining integrity and upholding the law, amidst instances of misconduct and criminal activities within their ranks.
