Golf fans were left disappointed when Tiger Woods announced his withdrawal from this week’s Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines. The golf superstar had initially planned to make his professional comeback after a seven-month hiatus but cited the recent passing of his mother as the reason for his decision.

In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Woods expressed his deep sorrow and explained that he was not emotionally prepared to return to competitive play. Despite his best efforts to prepare for the tournament, he acknowledged that he needed more time to process his loss.

Woods, a 15-time major champion, last competed in a non-major PGA Tour event at the Genesis last February before withdrawing due to illness. Since then, he has been plagued by ongoing injuries and struggled to find his form, missing the cut in three of last year’s four majors. His most recent competitive appearance was at The Open Championship in July.

The 49-year-old underwent back surgery in September and made a brief return to golf in December when he played alongside his son, Charlie, at the PNC Championship. Despite his recent setbacks, Woods remains optimistic about his future in the sport.

Torrey Pines holds a special place in Woods’ heart, as he has enjoyed tremendous success at the venue, including his iconic victory at the 2008 US Open in an 18-hole playoff. The decision to move the Genesis Invitational to Torrey Pines this year was prompted by the impact of wildfires in the Pacific Palisades area, where the event is typically held.

While fans may have to wait a little longer to see Woods back in action, there is no doubt that his return will be eagerly anticipated. His legacy in the sport of golf is undeniable, and his resilience in the face of adversity continues to inspire fans around the world.
