The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party president, Jacob Zuma, has made it clear that he has no intention of removing the party’s secretary general, Floyd Shivambu, despite calls from some regions for his removal. This decision was confirmed by the party’s head of presidency, Magasela Mzobe, who stated that the collective leadership of the MK party has full confidence in Shivambu.

The controversy surrounding Shivambu’s position arose from a letter written by Mxolisi Mthethwa, an eMalahleni zone coordinator, calling for Shivambu’s removal due to his alleged poor performance and behavior. Mthethwa accused Shivambu of making unilateral decisions without consulting relevant stakeholders, leading to confusion and disunity within the organization.

Mthethwa also raised concerns about Shivambu’s alleged lack of understanding and competence in key areas of responsibility, resulting in ineffective management and poor decision-making. Additionally, he accused Shivambu of unprofessional conduct, such as failing to pay constituency staff and rent for office buildings in KwaZulu-Natal.

In response to these allegations, Mzobe defended Shivambu, stating that all of his actions were sanctioned by Zuma and the collective leadership of the party. He dismissed the criticisms as coming from “unhappy people within the organization” who prefer a disorganized MK that does not take decisions organizationally.

Despite the calls for Shivambu’s removal, a source in the MK national high command emphasized that the letter by Mthethwa would not change anything. The source acknowledged the challenges faced by the secretary general in disciplining members and disbanding structures, but reassured that the party remains united and in support of its leadership.

It is worth noting that last month, the party suspended members allegedly involved in the unlawful registration of a candidate for by-elections in Msunduzi municipality’s ward 2 Sweetwater. Despite these challenges, the party’s eThekwini regional spokesperson, BF Dlamini, affirmed the region’s unity and support for the provincial and national leadership.

In conclusion, the controversy surrounding Floyd Shivambu’s position as secretary general of the MK party highlights the internal challenges faced by the organization. However, the party’s leadership remains steadfast in their support for Shivambu, emphasizing the importance of unity and organizational discipline.
