Despite the marketing claims that e-cigarettes are a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, the reality is that they still pose significant health risks. The use of e-cigarettes has become increasingly popular, especially among young people, creating a potential new generation of smokers. In South Africa, the prevalence of vaping among youth is a growing concern, with one in six learners reported to be vaping.

Personal Stories of VapingThe Risks of Vaping

Dr. Sharon Nyatsanza, Deputy Director at the National Council Against Smoking in South Africa, highlights the high rates of dual use of e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes in the country. The lack of regulation of vapes makes them easily accessible, particularly to young people who are being targeted by marketing campaigns.

While e-cigarettes do not contain the same toxic chemicals as traditional cigarettes, they still contain nicotine, which can lead to addiction. Recent studies have also linked e-cigarette use to various health issues, including lung injuries. This highlights the importance of understanding the risks associated with vaping.

Personal Stories of Vaping

Tholakele Mbonani, a freelance reporter from Ekurhuleni, shared the stories of individuals in her community who have been impacted by vaping. Solomon Mathe, a 36-year-old vape user, started vaping five years ago out of a desire to look “cool.” However, he has since experienced severe chest pains during his vaping sessions, raising concerns about the long-term effects on his health.

Sphiwe Mnisi, a 20-year-old from Tsakane, has been vaping for four years, initially starting with hubbly bubbly at parties. He enjoys the variety of flavors and the portability of disposable vapes, which he sees as a status symbol. Despite not considering the health implications, Mnisi vapes to fit in with his social circle and to appear cool.

Other individuals like Sbongiseni Mhlambi and Lwazi Mgcunu use e-cigarettes as a way to manage their smoking habits or as a recreational activity. Mhlambi finds vaping less addictive than traditional cigarettes and uses it to curb cravings, while Mgcunu vapes for fun on weekends without feeling dependent on it.

The Risks of Vaping

Professor Catherine Egbe, a Senior Specialist Scientist at the South African Medical Research Council, warns about the far-reaching effects of e-cigarettes, especially on young people. She explains that nicotine in e-cigarettes can impact the developing brain, making it more susceptible to addiction to other drugs like cannabis and cocaine.

E-cigarettes have also been found to be a gateway to smoking traditional cigarettes, increasing the likelihood of young people transitioning to other drugs. The smaller particles produced by vapes can have direct access to the body and introduce unique contaminants and chemicals into the e-liquid, posing additional health risks.

Some of the harmful substances found in e-liquids and aerosols include propylene glycol, cancer-causing tobacco chemicals, formaldehyde, heavy metals like nickel and tin, and addictive nicotine. These substances can have serious health implications and underline the importance of understanding the risks associated with vaping.

Health-e News: New Study Shows the Impact of Stress on Mental Health

A recent study published in the Journal of Psychology and Mental Health has shed light on the detrimental effects of stress on mental health. The study, conducted by a team of researchers from leading universities, analyzed data from over 1,000 participants and found a significant correlation between high levels of stress and an increased risk of developing mental health disorders.

The researchers found that individuals who reported experiencing high levels of stress were more likely to suffer from anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. The study also revealed that chronic stress can have a lasting impact on the brain, leading to cognitive impairments and memory problems.

One of the key findings of the study was the link between stress and the body’s immune system. The researchers discovered that prolonged exposure to stress can weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to illnesses and infections. This can further exacerbate mental health problems and lead to a vicious cycle of poor physical and mental well-being.

In light of these findings, the researchers emphasized the importance of managing stress effectively to protect mental health. They recommended a range of strategies, including mindfulness meditation, exercise, and therapy, to help individuals cope with stress and prevent its negative consequences.

The study has important implications for public health policy and mental health treatment. By raising awareness of the impact of stress on mental health, healthcare providers can better support individuals in managing stress and improving their overall well-being. It is crucial for individuals to prioritize self-care and seek help when needed to prevent the long-term effects of stress on mental health.
