Meet Yaw Rockson Adangabey: A Beacon of Hope in Rural Education
Yaw Rockson Adangabey, a 32-year-old school proprietor from Gbedema in the Builsa South District, is changing the lives of children in underserved rural communities. Despite facing challenges due to cerebral palsy, Yaw’s determination and selfless service have made him a finalist in MTN Heroes of Change Season 7. His story is a testament to the power of vision and commitment in true leadership.
Yaw believes that providing quality education to children in rural areas is his calling. He established the Adangabey Royal International School, the first private school in Gbedema, to bridge the educational gap in Builsa South. By accepting children as young as two years old, Yaw’s school ensures that even the most vulnerable have access to foundational learning.
Operating out of a modest rented two-bedroom house, the school currently serves over 160 pupils from nursery through Primary 4. Despite financial challenges, Yaw ensures that no child is turned away due to nonpayment, with fees capped at GHS 120 and flexible payment plans for inclusivity.
More than just academics, Yaw’s school instills hope, builds character, and prepares children to become responsible members of society. Parents and community leaders have witnessed the positive transformation in students’ attitudes and aspirations.
Sofia Ayaric, a retired lecturer from Tamale Technical University and Yaw’s nominator, praises his extraordinary work: “Yaw is a differently abled person from a very poor background who could have been begging on the streets. But instead, he chose to rise above his challenges to help others. His story is one of sacrifice, empathy, and hope.”
Community elder Eric Ayaric also praises Yaw, saying: “He commands respect and represents hope. He is changing the narrative about people with disabilities in our community.”
As a finalist in MTN Heroes of Change Season 7, Yaw is among ten inspiring individuals making a difference in Education, Health, and Economic Empowerment. The overall winner stands to receive GHS 100,000, with category winners receiving GHS 50,000 each. Yaw’s journey serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, showcasing the transformative power of education in rural communities.
As we celebrate the finalists, Yaw’s story reminds us that true heroes are those who take action to create change, no matter the obstacles they face.
