A tragic incident occurred in the Hamptons when marine biologist Amanda Kempton was arrested for a fatal hit-and-run involving prominent real estate agent Sara Burack. During her court appearance, Kempton’s lawyer claimed that she thought she had hit a traffic cone and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Despite the prosecutor’s request for a high bail of $100,000 due to Kempton being a potential flight risk, her family put up collateral for her release. The 32-year-old biologist, who hails from Virginia, faces up to seven years in prison for leaving the scene of the accident which led to Burack’s death.
Burack, known for her work in high-end properties and appearance on “Million Dollar Beach House,” was walking along Montauk Highway with a pink suitcase when she was struck by Kempton’s vehicle. The biologist, who holds degrees in microbiology and marine biology, had allegedly been at a tavern before the incident.
Despite the foggy conditions, Kempton claimed she did not see the victim and only realized what had happened when she found Burack’s suitcase lodged under her vehicle at a friend’s house. Authorities used a license plate reader to track Kempton’s movements and found her damaged vehicle at her family’s residence.
Kempton, who previously worked at the Children’s Museum of the East End and Camp Jekyll in Georgia, appeared in court wearing an orange sweatshirt as her family sat silently. Both Kempton and her family chose not to comment on the proceedings.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the consequences of leaving the scene of an accident. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Sara Burack during this difficult time.
