WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta announces changes affecting older Android devices

If you are experiencing issues with your WhatsApp messenger on your smartphone, it may be time for an upgrade. As of 1 January 2025, Android devices running the KitKat operating system or older will no longer be able to support WhatsApp. This change impacts users with Android phones that are nine to 10 years old.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, stated that this decision is aimed at enhancing security and improving app functionality. The company highlighted that older devices lack the hardware capabilities required to support the app’s evolving features and functionalities.

Implications of the changes

As WhatsApp introduces new features, such as AI functionalities, it necessitates more powerful hardware to ensure a seamless user experience. Meta is discontinuing support for older smartphones to enable the application to leverage artificial intelligence-based capabilities that older phone models may struggle to support.

Affected devices

Without software and security updates, devices that are no longer supported become more susceptible to cyber threats, and app functionality may be compromised. The following devices will no longer be supported by Meta:

  • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
  • Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
  • HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
  • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90

If you own one of the affected devices, it is recommended to upgrade to a smartphone that will be supported by Meta. Both regular WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business users will be impacted by these changes.

Changes for iPhone users

Apple iPhone users are not exempt from these changes. WhatsApp has outlined plans to discontinue support for several older iPhone models starting on May 5, 2025. The iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus will no longer be compatible with the messaging service, as they cannot run iOS 15.1, which will be the minimum operating system requirement in 2025.

In conclusion, regular reviews of operating systems and devices are conducted to ensure optimal performance and security. It is essential to stay informed about these changes and plan for necessary upgrades to continue using WhatsApp seamlessly.
