Western Cape has lowest HIV prevalence in SA, but youth infections are rising –

It is clear from the latest survey results that while progress has been made in the fight against HIV in the Western Cape, there are still challenges that need to be addressed to further reduce new infections and improve treatment outcomes.

One of the key findings of the survey is the increase in new infections among young people, particularly those under 24 years old. Another concerning trend is the decline in condom use, with only 22.1% of respondents reporting using a condom with their most recent sexual partner. This highlights the importance of promoting safe sex practices and ensuring access to condoms for those who need them.

Male circumcision rates have also decreased, posing a challenge to HIV prevention efforts. Male circumcision is a proven strategy for reducing the risk of HIV transmission, and efforts should be made to increase awareness and access to this service, especially among younger males and those in rural areas.

While access to antiretroviral treatment (ART) has improved, there are still disparities in ART coverage among different groups.
