The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has officially released the provisional results for the Ghana-only version of the 2024 West African Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE). This comes after the Ministry of Education (MoE) released GH₵35 million on December 28, 2024, to facilitate the processing of results for candidates. Although the Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum had initially promised the release of results by December 29, 2024, the results were made public a day later, bringing relief to parents, students, and tertiary institutions.
In a statement signed by WAEC’s Public Relations Officer John Kapi on December 30, 2024, it was announced that the entire results of 483 candidates were cancelled for having mobile phones in the examination halls. Additionally, the subject results of 4,108 candidates were cancelled for bringing foreign materials like prepared notes, textbooks, and printed material into the examination halls. The subject results of 781 candidates and the entire results of 209 candidates were withheld by the Council for suspected offences. Furthermore, WAEC revealed that the results of 319 schools were being withheld for alleged collusion and are currently under investigation.
The Council emphasized that the cases under investigation could result in the release or cancellation of the withheld results, depending on the outcome of the investigations. In terms of performance, there was a decrease in the performance of students in core subjects such as English, Integrated Science, and Social Studies compared to the previous year. However, Core Mathematics was the only core subject in which students performed better in 2024 than in 2023, with 4.63 percent more students achieving grades A1-C6 this year.
The release of the WASSCE results is a critical moment for students, parents, and educational institutions as it determines the future academic and career prospects of candidates. The Ministry of Education and WAEC continue to work tirelessly to ensure the integrity and fairness of the examination process, while also providing support and guidance to students to excel in their academic pursuits.
