Unlike Zohran Mamdani the majority of Dems want prosperity over class warfare

Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani’s recent primary victory has sparked excitement among liberals and progressives who see it as a step towards a “democratic socialist” revolution in New York City. However, a closer look at the history of socialism reveals a different story.

Socialism, wherever it has been implemented, has led to economic decay and mass death. The global death toll from socialism and communism is estimated to be around 100 million people, with atrocities ranging from Stalinist gulags to Mao’s Great Leap famine. The underlying logic is clear: when the state owns everything, the individual owns nothing, not even their own life.

Mamdani’s platform, which includes nationalized businesses, price controls, and government-run retail, mirrors the failures of socialism. While capitalism has lifted the living standards of billions without the mass graves associated with socialism, Mamdani’s proposals could have detrimental effects on New York City.

For instance, his plan to introduce city-run groceries to bring down prices may end up like Venezuela’s empty-shelf socialism. Similarly, a rent freeze could lead to a collapse in apartment listings, as seen in Berlin. Fare-free buses may not significantly increase ridership, as evidenced by Tallinn, Estonia’s experience. And no-cost child care, like Quebec’s $5-a-day program, could have negative effects on non-cognitive skills and overall well-being.

Mamdani’s proposal to fund these initiatives by punishing the rich could backfire, as seen in other socialist regimes where wealthy individuals fled the country, leading to economic decline. Additionally, his plan to boost the minimum wage to $30 an hour by 2030 could burden small employers and result in layoffs or closures.

On the issue of policing, Mamdani’s shift of funds to a new Department of Community Safety may not address the underlying issues. Successful socialist leaders have often relied on strong police forces to enforce their policies and suppress dissent, raising concerns about the implications of such a move.

Overall, Mamdani’s agenda fails to address the root causes of NYC’s problems, which stem from government policies that hinder economic growth. Restrictive zoning, high construction costs, and bureaucratic red tape contribute to high costs and stagnant wages in the city.

While some Democrats may be drawn to Mamdani’s agenda as a response to Donald Trump, it is important to consider the implications for Democratic voters who prioritize prosperity over class warfare. Many Latinos, who have experienced the negative effects of socialism firsthand, may be wary of a party willing to embrace socialist ideas.

In conclusion, Mamdani’s socialist agenda may not be the solution to NYC’s challenges, as it fails to address the underlying issues and could have unintended consequences. It is essential to learn from history and consider the long-term effects of such policies on the city and its residents.
