The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has been a crucial lifeline for over 50 countries worldwide, including Ethiopia, in the fight against HIV/AIDS. For more than two decades, PEPFAR has provided vital support, saving over 25 million lives and preventing millions of new infections.

In Ethiopia, the US government has invested over USD three billion to support the HIV/AIDS response. This investment has led to the establishment of regional referral laboratories, comprehensive outpatient centers, and health facilities across the country. PEPFAR has provided treatment to over 521,036 Ethiopians, with a focus on delivering care to 98 percent of people living with HIV on treatment.

While significant progress has been made, there are still challenges to overcome. Achieving long-term sustainability requires a new approach, focusing on improving local capacity, aligning efforts among donors and governments, and supporting Ethiopia’s vision for controlling the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Strengthening the public health system and empowering community-led initiatives are essential for long-term success.

PEPFAR is committed to partnering with the Government of Ethiopia, development partners, and civil society to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. By working together, we can sustain the gains made and accelerate progress towards a future free from HIV/AIDS.
