The launch ceremony for the rice distribution donated by China to Uganda was a significant event that took place on March 26 in Kampala. The Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, H.E Zhang Lizhong, along with Ugandan Prime Minister’s Special Representative Hon. State Minister for Karamoja Affairs and WFP Uganda Country Director, came together for this important occasion. Counselor Wang Jianxun and senior officials from the Office of the Prime Minister also attended the ceremony.
During the event, Ambassador Zhang Lizhong highlighted China’s commitment to assisting Africa in addressing food security issues. The Emergency Food Assistance project, initiated in response to the Ugandan government’s request, demonstrates China’s dedication to supporting Africa. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s announcement of the Ten Partnership Actions with African countries at the FOCAC Summit 2024 underscores China’s focus on modernization and collaboration with Africa. China and Uganda are actively working together to implement this initiative, with positive early outcomes. The Chinese government will continue to support Uganda’s economic and social development, fostering deeper cooperation across various sectors.
In response, Prime Minister’s Special Representative Hon. State Minister Florence expressed gratitude to China for their timely assistance in alleviating food shortages in the Karamoja sub-region. The Ugandan government is committed to ensuring that the food aid is promptly distributed to households facing food insecurity, vulnerable individuals, wildfire victims, and schools participating in feeding programs.
The World Food Programme (WFP) will play a crucial role in facilitating the storage, transportation, and distribution of the food aid. At the conclusion of the ceremony, Ambassador Zhang and the Prime Minister’s Special Representative signed handover certificates and waved flags to signal the departure of food trucks destined for Karamoja.
This initiative reflects the strong partnership between China and Uganda, with a shared commitment to addressing food security challenges and supporting the well-being of communities in need. The collaboration between the two countries serves as a model for international cooperation in tackling pressing global issues.
