President Donald Trump took to social media on Sunday to criticize Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), calling him “weak,” “lazy,” and “pathhetic” for opposing him on various issues including Iran and a recent bill. This is not the first time Massie has drawn the ire of the president, as he was one of only two GOP members to vote against Trump’s signature bill last month.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that Massie is not in line with the MAGA movement, despite claiming otherwise. He accused Massie of being ineffective and voting against proposals without considering their merit. Trump went on to say that MAGA should reject Massie like the plague and that he would actively campaign against him in the upcoming primary.
Massie, along with Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), recently spoke out against a military attack on Iran, introducing a bipartisan resolution to prohibit Trump from striking Iran without explicit authorization from Congress. Massie called the attack unconstitutional, while Trump dismissed him as a “negative force” and a “simple minded grandstander.”
Despite Trump’s previous attempts to oust Massie from office, this time his team is launching a super PAC aimed at funding a challenger who aligns with the MAGA agenda. Trump advisor Chris LaCivita stated that the PAC would spend “whatever it takes” to ensure Massie is defeated in the upcoming election.
It remains to be seen how Massie will respond to Trump’s attacks and the challenge from the super PAC. The rift between the two highlights the ongoing divisions within the Republican party and the continued influence of Trump on conservative politics.
