Donald Trump is set to be named Time magazine’s “Person of the Year” once again, with the president-elect scheduled to ring the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday morning to celebrate the unveiling of the cover. This news comes from sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to disclose the plans.
Last year, Time recognized pop superstar Taylor Swift, with Time CEO Jessica Sibley ringing the opening bell to mark the magazine cover reveal. Trump previously received the title of Time Person of the Year in 2016 after winning the presidential election, joining the ranks of 13 other U.S. presidents who have been honored, including President Joe Biden.
The shortlist for Time Person of the Year was announced on NBC’s “The Today Show” and includes Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris, Kate Middleton, Elon Musk, and Benjamin Netanyahu. Time has already revealed NBA star Caitlin Clark as Athlete of the Year, Elton John as Icon of the Year, and Lisa Su of Advanced Micro Devices as CEO of the Year.
A spokesperson for Time declined to comment on this year’s choice for Person of the Year prior to the official announcement on Time.com on Dec. 12. Trump has always been eager to appear on magazine covers, especially Time, and has been featured on the magazine cover three times this year.
The “Person of the Year” title is awarded to a newsmaker who has made a significant impact on the year’s events, with past recipients including Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth II, Vladimir Putin, and Joseph Stalin. Trump has expressed mixed feelings about the magazine in the past, calling it a “joke and stunt” in 2013 and expressing disappointment in not being chosen for the cover in 2015 when it went to Angela Merkel. However, he later stated that being named “Person of the Year” was a “great honor” and emphasized the importance of Time magazine in his life.
This year’s selection for Time Person of the Year will be revealed soon, and Trump’s appearance on the cover is sure to generate significant attention and discussion.
