Third Eyecare and Vision Centre Wraps Up Successful Kiddie Eyecare Days Event

Story by: Eric Boateng

Addressing the significant burden of vision impairment in Ghana, the Third Eyecare and Vision Centre recently concluded its annual eye screening program in Accra. The event, known as “Kiddie Eyecare Days,” focused on providing free eye screenings and corrective measures for children under the age of 18, tackling a growing public health concern.

From August 25 to August 29, the Ridge and Airport branches of the centers were bustling with activity as numerous children and their parents attended the free examinations. A team of skilled optometrists specializing in pediatric eye care conducted the five-day exercise, aiming to detect vision problems early and offer immediate intervention.

The optometrists utilized advanced equipment to assess the children’s vision and identify any issues, providing essential guidance to parents on preventing future vision problems.

Dr. Ignatius Safee Boafo, an optometrist at the Third Eyecare and Vision Centre, highlighted the increasing prevalence of refractive errors in children, a condition that impairs clear image focus and leads to blurred vision. He emphasized the importance of early and regular screenings, particularly for at-risk populations where refractive errors may be hereditary.

Uncorrected vision issues in children can have profound consequences, affecting educational performance and overall quality of life. With approximately 80% of learning occurring through vision, impaired sight can hinder a child’s ability to reach their full potential and impact their future opportunities.

The event revealed a pressing national need for sustained eye care solutions, as studies indicate a high prevalence of blindness and visual impairment in Ghana. The integration of comprehensive eye health programs into the country’s health and education systems is essential to address this crisis effectively.

The success of the Kiddie Eyecare Days event underscores the importance of proactive community-based initiatives in tackling vision challenges among children. By providing timely detection and correction, such programs play a vital role in ensuring that children can thrive without being hindered by preventable conditions.
