Renowned fashion designer Vanya Mangaliso and legendary musician Feya Faku were laid to rest on the same day, just three days apart from each other.

Mangaliso, the founder of Sun Goddess, passed away on June 26 at the age of 53, while Faku, a world-renowned trumpeter, died during a tour in Switzerland at the age of 63.

During Vanya Mangaliso’s funeral, her son Kwantu Mangaliso spoke fondly of his mother, highlighting her dedication not only to the fashion industry but also to her family. He emphasized her role as a mother and how she worked tirelessly to provide for her family and build a lasting legacy.

Since her passing, tributes have poured in from various figures in the fashion industry and beyond. Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, the founder of Africa Fashion International (AFI), commended Mangaliso for her contributions to South African fashion. ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula also recognized her as a trailblazer who paved the way for other African designers to thrive in the industry.

Vanya Mangaliso was laid to rest at the Heroes Acre in Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg, alongside other iconic figures in South African history. She is survived by her husband, Thando Mangaliso, her four children, and a legacy that lives on through Sun Goddess.

On the same day, Feya Faku was buried in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, where family and friends gathered to honor his musical legacy. Gift Ngqondi praised Faku for his international acclaim as a trumpeter, highlighting his performances at prestigious festivals around the world.

Fellow musician McCoy Mrubata fondly remembered Faku’s unique style of playing the trumpet, describing it as his “second voice” that captivated audiences with its soulful melodies. Before his passing, Faku was dedicated to nurturing young musical talent in his community through a proposed music program in New Brighton schools.
