The Red Sea International Film Festival Showcases Global Storytelling in Jeddah
The fourth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival is currently underway in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, featuring a diverse range of storytelling from around the world.
This year’s lineup includes more than 120 films from 81 countries, with 16 films competing in the Features Competition.
One of the highlights is the premiere of the Sudanese drama My Driver and I, which explores the relationship between a driver and a young Saudi woman he chauffeurs.
Lead actor Mustafa Shehata described the film as deeply emotional and personal. “The film depicts the story of an immigrant taxi driver who treats a young customer as if she were his own daughter. He has a daughter back home in Sudan whom he hasn’t seen in a long time,” he explained.
The film follows the story of Salma and Gamar, who come from different backgrounds and generations. Over the course of ten years, a strong bond develops between them as he drives her daily. “It showcases how the girl’s parents entrust him with their daughter, especially when the father is away for work and the mother is occupied,” Shehata added.
Saudi Arabia is using platforms like the festival to increase its presence in the film, sports, and entertainment industries. Since its launch in 2021, the festival has attracted prominent global talent.
This year’s event will feature Academy Award winners Viola Davis and Spike Lee, along with Bollywood stars Aamir Khan and Ranbir Kapoor, solidifying its position on the international film stage.
However, some critics argue that events like the festival are a way to divert attention from concerns about Saudi Arabia’s human rights record.
The festival will continue until December 14, offering audiences a unique opportunity to experience the best of international cinema.
