Sudan commemorated two years of a devastating war on Tuesday, a conflict that has left a trail of destruction in its wake. Tens of thousands have lost their lives, 13 million have been displaced, and the country is facing the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. Despite the passage of time, there is still no sign of peace on the horizon.
To gain a deeper understanding of the situation in Sudan, FRANCE 24’s Kethevane Gorjestani sat down with Alyona Synenko, the Regional Spokesperson for Africa at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Synenko highlighted the lack of respect for international humanitarian law by the warring parties, leading to catastrophic consequences for civilians.
“The way this conflict has been conducted by the two parties is not respectful and does not comply with the norms of international humanitarian law,” Synenko emphasized. “This is why we are seeing devastating humanitarian consequences, with hundreds of thousands killed and millions of people displaced.”
The ongoing conflict in Sudan has had far-reaching implications, not just for the country itself but for the entire region. The ICRC has been working tirelessly to provide aid and support to those affected by the crisis, but the scale of the devastation is overwhelming.
As the world marks another year of conflict in Sudan, it is imperative that the international community steps up its efforts to bring about a peaceful resolution. The suffering of the Sudanese people cannot continue unchecked, and it is up to all of us to ensure that their voices are heard and their needs are met.
In the face of unimaginable hardship and loss, the people of Sudan have shown incredible resilience and strength. It is time for the rest of the world to stand in solidarity with them and work towards a future where peace and stability are the norm, rather than the exception.
