The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has stepped in to provide essential support to the residents of Zamzam camp in Sudan, where severe fighting has displaced tens of thousands of people from their homes. The city of Al-Fasher has been a battleground for months, making it difficult for supplies to reach those in need.
In response to the dire situation, eight community kitchens have been set up in the camp, serving two hot meals a day to approximately 10,000 displaced individuals. These kitchens, supported by the ICRC and the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS), are a lifeline for many families who are struggling to put food on the table.
Daniel O’Malley, the head of the ICRC delegation in Sudan, highlighted the importance of these community kitchens, stating that for many residents, it is their only source of sustenance. However, he also warned that without additional support, a humanitarian crisis is inevitable.
One resident of the camp, Malak Abdalla Ali, expressed gratitude for the meals provided, noting that it had been seven months since she had last eaten a decent meal. Zamzam camp, home to nearly half a million people, is considered a safe haven in northern Darfur. However, with ongoing fighting in Al-Fasher, the camp is facing food shortages and a lack of essential services.
O’Malley emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian space to ensure that civilians receive the aid they require. He called on all parties involved in the conflict to prioritize the well-being of the civilian population and allow for the delivery of essential supplies.
The situation in and around Al-Fasher remains dire, with civilians caught in the crossfire. The ICRC continues to work tirelessly to provide assistance to those in need, but additional support is crucial to prevent a deepening humanitarian crisis in Zamzam camp.
