The Springboks Prepare to Face the Barbarians Under New Captain Jesse Kriel
Despite being fit to play, Springbok captain Siya Kolisi will sit out the non-Test match against the Barbarians in Cape Town this Saturday. Assistant coach Mzwandile Stick revealed that it was a precautionary measure to prevent aggravating a minor neck injury, especially with a demanding season ahead.
In Kolisi’s absence, experienced outside centre Jesse Kriel will lead the team for the first time. The coaching staff has full confidence in Kriel’s leadership abilities and believe he is well-equipped to guide the team in Kolisi’s absence.
Stick emphasized that the decision to rest Kolisi was made in the best interest of the player’s long-term well-being and the team’s performance in the upcoming fixtures. He expressed optimism that Kolisi will be fully recovered by the time the team faces Italy and Georgia later in the season.
Recognition of Hard Work
Although Kriel will not officially become the 67th captain of the Springboks due to the non-Test nature of the match, Stick commended Kriel’s dedication and hard work that earned him the temporary captaincy. He highlighted Kriel’s commitment to the team, both on and off the field, as a key factor in his selection as captain.
Stick praised Kriel’s leadership qualities and expressed excitement to see him in action as the team’s captain. He noted Kriel’s vocal presence and lead-by-example attitude as valuable assets that will benefit the team in the match against the Barbarians.
Looking ahead to the challenge posed by the Barbarians, Stick acknowledged the team’s reputation for exciting and expansive play. He emphasized the importance of making wise decisions on the field and adapting to the unpredictable nature of the opposition’s style of play.
With the international season kicking off against a formidable opponent like the Barbarians, Stick believes it will provide the Springboks with a valuable test to prepare them for the competitive matches ahead. He anticipates a tough battle but is confident in the team’s ability to rise to the challenge.
