State Medicaid authority terminates MedRide amid lawsuit, confusion

The Colorado Medicaid authority made a bold move by terminating its contract with MedRide, a major transportation provider in the state, citing concerns about public health and safety. This decision followed a tumultuous week filled with suspensions, legal battles, and accusations of fraudulent activity.

MedRide, known for offering transportation services to Medicaid patients for medical appointments, was accused of failing to meet transportation requirements set in place after a previous fraud scandal involving transportation providers in the Medicaid program. The state Department of Health Care Policy and Financing accused MedRide of submitting illegitimate claims, including rides for unaccompanied minors, inaccurate mileage claims, trips with multiple passengers, and rides lacking proper documentation.

Adela Flores-Brennan, the state’s Medicaid director, emphasized the importance of ensuring safe access to transportation for Medicaid patients, leading to the decision to terminate MedRide’s contract. However, MedRide officials contested the decision, stating that they were appealing the termination and urging the state to work with them to resolve the issues promptly.

The situation escalated when HCPF initially suspended MedRide for alleged fraud, only to reverse the decision after a legal challenge from the company. Despite dropping the suspension due to conflicting state laws, Medicaid officials maintained concerns about potential fraudulent activities by MedRide, a claim that the company vehemently denied.

MedRide’s owner and president, Greg Harriman, expressed frustration over the ongoing dispute, highlighting the impact on Medicaid patients who rely on the company for essential medical transportation services. He urged the state to engage in dialogue to swiftly resolve the issues and ensure uninterrupted access to critical healthcare services.
