The call for change in Cape Town football has reached a crescendo, with Cape Town Spurs expressing their frustration with the neglect of the sport by both the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the City of Cape Town. The recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between Bafana Bafana and South Sudan at Cape Town Stadium highlighted the lack of support for football in the city, despite the sold-out crowd and overwhelming popularity of the sport.

In a scathing statement, Spurs criticized city officials for prioritizing rugby over football, leaving both professional and amateur football clubs feeling marginalized and undervalued. The club emphasized the need for suitable venues and facilities to nurture the development of football at all levels, pointing out the struggles they have faced in securing appropriate locations for matches.

Despite these challenges, Cape Town Spurs F.C. has managed to thrive with the establishment of their training center, IKAMVA, which has become a hub for producing top talent in the country. The club has relied on the support of corporate sponsors to sustain their operations, as they have received no financial assistance from the national association or government.

The statement from Spurs underscored the importance of recognizing the influence and potential of football in South Africa, calling for a shift in mindset to elevate the sport to new heights. The club urged all stakeholders, including corporations, to actively contribute to the growth and development of football in the country, emphasizing the impact it can have on both the youth and the community at large.

As football continues to play second fiddle to rugby in Cape Town, the time for change is now. It is imperative for Cape Town, SAFA, and all involved parties to come together and prioritize football, paving the way for a brighter future for the sport in the city and beyond. By acknowledging the significance of football and working collaboratively towards its advancement, Cape Town can unlock the vast potential that lies within the sport and create opportunities for generations to come.
