South Sudan is gearing up to restart its oil production at a rate of 90,000 barrels per day, following a nearly year-long hiatus due to the conflict in Sudan. The interruption in oil production began in February 2023 when Sudan invoked a force majeure clause, resulting in the halt of oil exports to international markets. However, with Sudan lifting the ban on January 4, 2025, South Sudan is now poised to resume its vital oil production that contributes to 90% of the country’s GDP.

Even amidst the global push towards sustainable and renewable energy sources, South Sudan remains steadfast in its commitment to oil production. Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol emphasized the importance of oil resources for the nation’s economic recovery and overall survival. He stressed that oil remains a crucial resource for meeting immediate needs such as healthcare and food security not only for South Sudan but for Africa as a whole.

The decision to resume oil production comes as a significant relief for South Sudan, as the country heavily relies on oil revenues to support its economy. With the lifting of the ban by Sudan, South Sudan can now once again export its oil to international markets, providing a much-needed boost to its financial stability.

It is important to note that while the global energy landscape is shifting towards cleaner alternatives, the reality is that many developing nations, including South Sudan, still heavily depend on oil resources for their economic development. As such, the decision to resume oil production is a strategic move to ensure the country’s economic viability and sustainability in the face of ongoing challenges.

In conclusion, South Sudan’s plan to restart oil production at 90,000 barrels per day signifies a crucial step towards economic recovery and stability. Despite the increasing emphasis on green energy solutions, oil remains a vital resource for meeting the immediate needs of the nation. As South Sudan navigates through the complexities of the global energy transition, its commitment to oil production highlights the importance of balancing economic development with sustainability goals.
