The Portfolio Committee on International Relations has successfully launched the people-centred oversight mechanism for international relations in Mpumalanga, North West, and Gauteng provinces.
The committee Chairperson, Mr Supra Mahumapelo, announced that the committee has completed the introduction and the first phase of involving the people at local, ward, district, and provincial levels for their direct participation in matters related to international relations.
Mr Mahumapelo called on the Department of International Relations and Cooperation to play a catalytic role in ensuring that the launches translate into real involvement of the people in these matters. He emphasized that the department will facilitate a better understanding of trade agreements and other international developments between South Africa and its trading partners.
The committee is optimistic about the success of the people-centred oversight mechanism in achieving its objectives, emphasizing the importance of ordinary people understanding the value of trade agreements for economic growth opportunities and their direct participation in the economy to combat poverty.
The Gauteng leg of the oversight mechanism launch was well-attended by various organizations and individuals, including representatives from the embassies of China and Brazil, government officials, labor unions, and civil society organizations. The committee plans to continue launching the program in the remaining six provinces to ensure widespread public engagement in international relations matters.
Mr Mahumapelo highlighted the importance of educating South Africans about the country’s involvement in international organizations such as SADC, AU, UN, the Commonwealth, and BRICS. He also called on the Department of International Relations and Cooperation to provide clear information about South Africa’s presidency of the G20.
