Empowering Inmates through Greenhouse Cultivation at Sebikotane Prison
Collaboration between the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) and the Senegalese Ministry of Justice has led to the establishment of two modern greenhouses at Sebikotane Prison. These greenhouses aim to support training and rehabilitation efforts by providing inmates with the opportunity to acquire valuable skills in greenhouse cultivation.
The project, carried out in partnership with the National School of Penitentiary Administration under the Senegalese Ministry of Justice, consists of two greenhouses, each covering an area of 2,500 square meters. Situated within the premises of Sebikotane Prison and overseen by the Dakar Regional Prison authority, this initiative is designed to help inmates develop professional skills and prepare for a successful reintegration into society.
One of the key features of the project is the installation of a drip irrigation system that covers a total greenhouse area of 5,000 square meters. Additionally, the initiative includes the provision of vegetable seeds, fruit seedlings, fertilizers, humus soil, and various agricultural tools, ensuring that the inmates have all the necessary resources for successful greenhouse production.
The vegetables grown in the TİKA-established greenhouse will primarily be used for inmates’ consumption, with any surplus being sold. The revenue generated from these sales will be used to support prisoner rehabilitation programs within the prison.
Ultimately, the project aims to equip inmates with skills in greenhouse cultivation, thereby enhancing their chances of successful reintegration into society upon release and reducing the likelihood of reoffending. By providing inmates with valuable training opportunities, the collaboration between TİKA and the Senegalese Ministry of Justice is making a positive impact on the lives of incarcerated individuals at Sebikotane Prison.
